Dodge decided to begin phasing out production of its Dart model beginning at the end of September.
Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) reported that sales of the Dart model were well under competitive numbers. SUV’s have become more popular in recent years, especially with the drop in gas prices. That being said, it is difficult for smaller cars like the Dart to compete.
Instead, FCA will channel its manufacturing efforts into more popular models, namely the Ram 1500 and the Jeep Cherokee.
FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne said that the Dart “yielded returns that would not, on a competitive basis, match even anything close or remotely close to what we could derive from utilization of those assets in the Jeep or Ram world.”
Dodge Darts will not disappear right away. FCA plans to cease production gradually over the coming months, and they are actively seeking a partner that could further develop the vehicle in the future.
