If you’re an Apple enthusiast, then you’re going to be thrilled by CarPlay, a new slice of Apple software that will be integrated into many new vehicles’ infotainment system beginning at the end of 2015. Almost all major automakers are onboard with CarPlay, including Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, Subaru, Ford and Volkswagen.
What will CarPlay do for you? It allows your iPhone to take over the car’s infotainment system. That means you’ll be able to access functions on your phone – like your music or messages – directly from your car’s display screen. You’ll also be able to use the car’s Bluetooth system to interact with your phone’s voice activation system, which will allow you to access your contacts, pull up music and send text messages via Siri.
If you’re not planning on buying new wheels anytime soon, don’t worry. If your beloved Jeep Patriot or other vehicle already has an infotainment system with a touch screen, you’ll be able to buy an adaptor from Pioneer or Alpine that will allow you to use CarPlay on your preexisting infotainment system.
CarPlay is just another example of how technology is continuing to integrate into our lives.
What’s next…self-driving cars? Oh, wait. Cars with self-driving features are already on the road…
