More and more often, homeowners are facing the reality of flooding. These natural disasters can, if they spare the house, still wreck havoc on HVAC systems, appliances and electrical systems.
Here are three tips for protecting your home from flooding:
- Find out if you’re in a flood plain. FEMA is routinely updating areas designated as flood plain, and these areas are constantly changing. Check out FEMA’s website to see if your property is at risk.
- Know what you can do. If your home is in an at-risk area, make sure that your gutters are clear and your downspouts are directed away from your home. Make sure that your central air, furnace and heat pumps are elevated above estimated levels for floodwaters or located in the attic.
- Make sure you have flood insurance. These plans could be costly but totally worth it in the event of a flood.
If flooding does hit, you’ll want to make sure that you and your family are safe and out of harm’s way. Doing prep work beforehand to secure your home as best as possible will leave you less conflicted and feeling more secure.
