When you get that first chilly night of the winter, you probably don’t think much of flipping your thermostat to heat. If it’s the first time in months that your furnace has been turned on, you may be wondering about the answers to a few questions.
What’s That Smell?
It’s very common for your furnace emit a faint burning smell when you first turn it on. Usually it won’t smell for more than a few minutes and isn’t a major issue, but it’s a good idea to have a professional HVAC technician look over your furnace as fall or winter approaches.
This article from Angie’s List explains:
If you notice an odd burn smell when the heat turns on, it may be a sign that your furnace needs maintenance. It could be something as minor as a dirty filter, but it could also be a serious problem like a broken electrical component in the furnace. Don’t ignore it. Try to find the source of the odor to avoid costly repairs in the future.
Is The Airflow Good?
Another important thing to check is your airflow. Check your air vents, air ducts and registers for any debris or obstructions that would restrict airflow. Make sure your system is running as efficiently as possible and that you have good circulation of clean air.
Your ductwork should be cleaned every few years and checked for loose connections and wear and tear every year.
What’s That Noise?
HVAC systems can make some strange noises at times, signaling the need for repair. If your furnace is making unusual noises while running or struggling to run normally, call an expert to take a look. It may save you from a bigger and more expensive repair later.
